About Hokkaido University × J-PEAKS

Project Overview

Hokkaido University is committed to generating outstanding research and applying it to real-world issues to create meaningful social impact. In particular, by leveraging its extensive field research sites, the university helps address one of the world’s most pressing concerns: sustainable food production.

Rather than simply reducing the environmental footprint of food production, we seek to advance regenerative agriculture, forestry, and fisheries—approaches in which these industries actively contribute to environmental restoration. To support this vision, the university has established a research hub dedicated to regenerative approaches in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. Through these efforts, Hokkaido University aims to achieve research excellence while contributing to solutions for society’s needs.

At the same time, many questions remain unresolved, and some problems cannot be addressed using existing knowledge alone. Tackling these complex issues requires an interdisciplinary approach that brings researchers together across disciplinary boundaries to generate new knowledge. Such research forms the foundation for developing innovative responses to emerging global issues. Under Hokkaido University’s J-PEAKS initiative, the university has introduced mechanisms to support and sustain interdisciplinary research and collaboration.

The university also supports a wide range of interdisciplinary research projects and provides appropriate assistance as they develop. In addition, we strengthen collaboration with partners in Japan and around the world, promoting the translation of research outcomes into practical applications. Through this initiative, we aim to enhance our capacity to generate impactful research and contribute sustainably to solving real-world problems.

President’s Message

As we approach the 150th anniversary of Hokkaido University, we have launched the J-PEAKS initiative with a clear long-term vision and a strong commitment to achieving its goals.

Through this initiative, Hokkaido University has established a university-wide strategic framework to create and nurture new interdisciplinary fields.

Under this framework, we will bring together agriculture, fisheries, environmental science, and ecology—leveraging our world-class forests, farms, and other field research sites—and collaborate with leading universities abroad to advance regenerative and sustainable food systems.

In partnership with institutions across Hokkaido, we will also translate cutting-edge research into solutions for regional needs, create new industries, and drive regional growth with global impact.
