Humanity now stands at a critical juncture. On Earth, we face mounting pressures from population growth and resource depletion, which are steadily reducing habitable spaces. At the same time, we are turning our eyes toward the new frontier of outer space and the possibility of life beyond our planet. Ensuring that our species can survive and thrive—both by preserving our home planet and by venturing into uncharted realms—is one of the greatest challenges of our time.

Scientists at Hokkaido University are addressing this grand challenge by focusing on the fundamental pillars of life: healthcare, food, and a healthy living environment. Through the project titled “Basic Research for Expanding the Human Habitat,” they are conducting parallel studies on Earth and aboard the International Space Station (ISS). By elucidating the mechanisms of disease occurrence in space and developing novel treatments, as well as devising methods to ensure sustainable food supplies and comfortable, green environments, the researchers aim to lay the groundwork for all people—whether traveling or living in space—to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
