Discovery of “ISSUNBOSHI1,” a gene that controls both gravity response and photosynthesis in plants

July 16, 2025

Professor Fujita of the Faculty of Science, Hokkaido University, a co-investigator of the Sonoshita Project, identified a plant-specific transcription factor belonging to the AP2/ERF family. This transcription factor enhances photosynthetic activity under hypergravity (10G) and is thought to be involved in anti-gravitational responses that result in thicker and shorter stems. The transcription factor was named ISSUNBOSHI1 (IBSH1).
